The BMF 'Blue Riband' Rider Award

The aim of the course is to assist experienced motorcyclists to improve their riding skills and to increase the enjoyment that they get out of motorcycling. The course seeks to encourage you to think about why? and what? you are doing when you are riding, to be self critical and to be able to recognise your own strengths and weaknesses.

The main objective throughout the course is that safety must be paramount at all times, without losing the enjoyment!

The 'Blue Riband' course runs in two modes:

Pre - course requirements:

  • It is necessary to have spent some time studying the "Motorcycle Roadcraft" manual and have completed the question papers included in the course pack, prior to the practical instruction.
  • The course is intensive and will take place at quite a pace throughout the day.

Concentrated:

  • Held over two days.
  • Day one will incorporate question and answer sessions and practical riding instruction.
  • Day two consists of practical riding instruction and assessment.
  • The practical riding sessions cover distances of between 150 - 200 miles, broken into sessions with stops for debriefs, refreshments and lunch.
  • The finish time is dependant on progress made during the day, weather conditions and the enthusiasm of the client!

Standard:

  • Theory and question and answer sessions as the concentrated course.
  • Practical sessions are broken into separate modules, to be held at times appropriate to the client and the Instructor.
  • This enables the client to structure the course over a longer period, giving time for the new techniques to be practised before the next session.
  • Modules are usually 2 - 4 hours depending on the clients requirements.

  • Machine requirements:
    • We advise that you and your machine must be capable of coping with both the speed and distances involved.
    • A minimum power output of 25Kw (33bhp) for participating machines and your machine should not be less than 500cc as it may not be suitable, unless it is one of the high powered smaller bikes.
    • You must be familiar with your machine, as some of the techniques may be new to you.
    • You must have held a full motorcycle licence for at least six months and have an appropriate level of experience.

    Completion of the course:

    • It is advisable to practice what you have been taught, before undergoing an assessment ride to obtain the
    • 'Blue Riband' certificate (Valid for only three years)
    • You will also receive a written assessment containing advice on the subject areas of forward planning, positioning on bends, following, overtaking, hazard awareness and judgement, observations, use of the System, use of speed and any other comments.
